Materials Needed:

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Flashcards with words containing silent letter "w"
  • Worksheets with exercises on silent letter "w"
  • Reading passages with words containing silent letter "w"
  • Projector
  • Teacher’s blogsite
  • Chromebooks

Duration: 60 minutes

Engage (10 minutes):

  • Begin the lesson by engaging students' interest in the topic. Show a picture or flashcard of a word with a silent 'w', such as "wrist" or "wren".
  • Ask students if they notice anything unusual about the word. Guide them to recognize the silent 'w' and discuss its role in pronunciation.
  • Encourage students to share any words they know that contain a silent 'w' and discuss their meanings.

Explore (15 minutes):

  • Provide students with a variety of words containing silent 'w' on flashcards or word cards. These words could include "wrist", "wreck", "write", "wrestle", etc.
  • In pairs or small groups, have students explore the words, focusing on identifying the silent 'w' and practicing pronouncing the words correctly.
  • Encourage students to discuss any patterns or rules they notice about when 'w' is silent in words.
  • View video clip on teacher’s blogsite which gives rules for the silent “w”.
  • Pronounce words highlighted on chart correctly.

Explain (10 minutes):

  • As a whole class, review the patterns and rules for silent 'w' based on the words explored during the previous activity.
  • Discuss common patterns such as 'wr-' at the beginning of words and '-ew' at the end of words.
  • Provide clear explanations and examples to ensure students understand why 'w' is silent in certain words.

Elaborate (15 minutes):

  • Divide students into pairs or small groups and provide them with worksheets containing exercises on silent 'w' words.
  • Encourage students to work collaboratively to complete the exercises, identifying and reading words with silent 'w'.
  • Circulate around the classroom to provide support and guidance as needed, answering questions and clarifying concepts.
  • Complete grouped activity from teacher’s blogsite orally.

Evaluate (10 minutes):

  • Conclude the lesson with an evaluation activity to assess students' understanding of words with silent 'w' 
  • Ask students to individually complete a short quiz or assessment task where they must identify and read words with silent 'w'.
