Subject: Word Recognition and Fluency            Date: _________________________

Objective: Students will begin to use the knowledge of roots and affixes to determine the meaning of words, specifically focusing on prefixes.

Materials:

·         Projector

·         Teacher’s Blogsite

·         Students’ chromebooks

·         Whiteboard and markers

·         Chart paper and markers

·         Examples of words with prefixes

·         Worksheets with exercises on identifying prefixes

·         Reading passages or storybooks containing words with prefixes

Duration: 60 minutes

Engage:

1.     Begin the lesson by asking students if they know what a prefix is. Encourage them to share their ideas and prior knowledge.

2.     Write a few words on the board that contain prefixes. Ask students if they can identify the prefixes and what they think they mean.

3.     Discuss with the class why understanding prefixes is important for determining the meaning of words.

Explore:

1.     Present a short lesson on prefixes, explaining what they are and how they change the meaning of words. Use examples and visuals found on teacher’s blogsite to help students understand. Teacher will establish that the prefixes comes before the root of the words. They will distinguish between both.

2.     Engage students in an interactive activity where they identify prefixes in words  provided by teacher. Allow them to work individually or in small groups.

3.     Provide worksheets with exercises on identifying prefixes for students to complete orally and independently.

Explain:

1.     Review the answers to the worksheet as a class, discussing any questions or misconceptions students may have.

2.     Use the chart paper to create a chart displaying common prefixes, their meanings, and examples of words containing each prefix.

3.     Explain in groups and individually what prefixes are and provide meaning for some prefixes.

Elaborate:

1.     Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a reading passage or storybook containing words with prefixes.

2.     Ask the groups to identify and underline the words with prefixes in the text. Then, have them discuss the meanings of these words based on the prefixes.

3.     Each group presents their findings to the class, explaining the meanings of the words they identified and how they used the prefixes to determine these meanings.

Evaluate:

1.     Assess students' understanding of prefixes through their participation in class discussions, completion of worksheets, and performance in the group activity.

2.     Provide feedback to students on their ability to identify prefixes and determine the meanings of words using this knowledge.

3.     Encourage students to continue practising identifying and using prefixes in their reading and writing outside of the classroom.

      Complete activities on teacher's blogsite.

Extension: For students who demonstrate a strong understanding of prefixes, challenge them to create their own words using prefixes and share them with the class. Additionally, they can explore how prefixes are used in different contexts and discuss how they contribute to the meaning of words.
