TELLING THE TIME

 TELLING THE TIME

Clocks are used to tell time in hours, minutes and seconds.

An analog clock is one of clocks. It uses hands and numbers. The longer hand represents the minutes and the shorter hand represents  the hour.

A digital clock does not use hands. The hour and minutes are separated from each other by a colon (:). The hour is displayed on the left of the colon while the minutes are to the right.

Below are two Analog clocks and a digital clock.

Lesson 1

Title: Exploring Time with Clocks

Grade Level: Grade 3

Duration: 1 hour

Objectives:

1.      Students will investigate the relationship between minutes and hours.

2.      Students will be able to tell or show time on the clock using intervals.

Materials:

  • Analog clocks
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Worksheets with clock faces
  • Timer or stopwatch
  • Craft materials for STEM activity (paper, scissors, glue, markers)
  • Projector
  • Chromebooks
  • Teacher’s Blogsite

Engage (10 minutes):

  • Begin by asking students if they know how to read time on a clock.
  • Show them an analog clock and ask them to identify the hour and minute hands.
  • Discuss with students what they know about the relationship between minutes and hours.

Explore (15 minutes):

  • Divide students into small groups and provide each group with an analog clock and worksheets with clock faces.
  • Instruct students to work together to determine the time shown on the clock and record it on their worksheets.
  • Encourage students to discuss and compare their answers within their groups.
  • Watch a video clip which explains more about the clock.
  • Do oral activities together from teacher’s blogsite

Explain (15 minutes):

  • As a class, review the relationship between minutes and hours.
  • Use the whiteboard to demonstrate how the hour hand moves gradually as the minutes progress.
  • Explain how each hour is divided into 60 minutes, and each minute is a fraction of an hour.
  • Discuss strategies for reading time intervals on a clock, such as counting by fives.

Elaborate (15 minutes):

  • Introduce a STEM activity where students create their own analog clocks using craft materials.
  • Instruct students to design and construct their clocks, ensuring they accurately represent the hour and minute hands.
  • Encourage creativity and problem-solving as students work on their designs.

Evaluate (20 minutes):

  • For the evaluation, use a three-tier activity:

·         Tier 1: Provide simple clock faces with hour and minute hands drawn at various intervals. Ask students to write down the time shown on each clock face.

·         Tier 2: Provide more complex clock faces with hour and minute hands at different intervals. Ask students to draw the hands on the clock faces to represent the given times.

·         Tier 3: Challenge students to create their own clock faces with specific times and intervals. Have them exchange their creations with a partner to solve.

All students will complete assigned activities on teacher's blogsite

Closure (5 minutes):

  • Review the key concepts learned during the lesson.
  • Ask students to reflect on what they found challenging and what they enjoyed about the lesson.

Homework:

  • Assign students to practice reading time on analog clocks at home using worksheets or online resources.

This lesson plan incorporates hands-on activities, group work, and STEM elements to engage students in exploring and understanding the concepts of time and clocks.
