Procedure:
Engage: (5 minutes)
1. Begin the lesson by asking the students if
they know what vowels are and what makes a vowel sound.
2. Discuss briefly with students the concept of
r-controlled vowels, explaining that sometimes when a vowel is followed by the
letter r, it changes its sound (e.g., ar, er, ir, or, ur).
Explore: (10 minutes) 3. Show flashcards with words containing
r-controlled vowels to the class (e.g., car, her, bird, fork).
4. Have students repeat the words after you and
identify the vowel sound affected by the letter r.
5. Encourage students to come up with other words
they know that contain r-controlled vowels.
Discuss the meanings of some of the new words generated during class discussion.
Explain: (10 minutes) 6. Write a few words with r-controlled vowels
on the board, such as "car", "her", "bird",
"fork", and "fur".
7. Explain to the students that when a vowel is
followed by the letter r, it changes its sound to a unique r-controlled vowel
sound (e.g., /ɑː/ in "car", /ɜː/ in "her").
8. Model how to sound out each word, emphasizing
the r-controlled vowel sound.
Elaborate: (15 minutes) 9. Distribute printed worksheets with words
containing r-controlled vowels to each student.
10. In pairs or small groups, have students read
the words on the worksheet aloud to each other, focusing on the r-controlled
vowel sounds.
11. Walk around the classroom to provide
assistance and guidance as needed.
12. As an extension activity, provide reading
books containing r-controlled vowel words for students to practice reading
independently or with a partner.
