Objective: Students will be able to identify and use the concept of the past participle to enhance their writing skills.

Materials:

·         Whiteboard and markers

·         Chart paper and markers

·         Examples of sentences using past participles

·         Worksheets with exercises on past participles

·         Storybook or passage for a reading activity

·         Projector

·         Teacher’s blogsite (janicebowes3,blogspot,com)

·         Students’ chromebooks

Duration: 60 minutes

Engage:

1.      Begin the lesson by reviewing the present and past tense of verbs.

2.      Ask students if they know what a past participle is. Encourage them to share their ideas and prior knowledge.

3.      Write a few sentences on the board that contain past participles. Ask students to identify the past participles in the sentences.

4.      Discuss with the class why understanding past participles is important for writing.

Explore:

1.      Present a short lesson on past participles, explaining what they are and how they are used in sentences. Teacher will have students watching a video clip on her blogsite and reading visuals presented with  examples  to help students understand.

2.      Engage students in an interactive activity where they identify past participles in sentences you provide. Allow them to work individually or in small groups.

3.      Provide worksheets with exercises on identifying past participles for students to complete independently.

Explain:

1.      Review the answers to the worksheet as a class, discussing any questions or misconceptions students may have.

2.      Use the chart paper to create a chart displaying the rules and examples of past participles for reference.

Elaborate:

1.      Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a storybook or passage containing past participles.

2.      Ask the groups to identify and underline the past participles in the text. Then, have them rewrite the passage, incorporating additional past participles to enhance the writing.

3.      Each group presents their rewritten passage to the class, explaining their choices of past participles and how they improved the writing.

4.      Complete activities on past participle on their Chromebooks individually.

Evaluate:

1.      Assess students' understanding of past participles through their participation in class discussions, completion of worksheets, and performance in the group activity.

2.      Provide feedback to students on their use of past participles and offer suggestions for improvement.

3.      Encourage students to continue practising using past participles in their writing outside of the classroom.

Extension: For students who demonstrate a strong understanding of past participles, challenge them to create their own sentences using past participles and share them with the class. Additionally, they can explore how past participles are used in different types of writing, such as narratives, poems, or informational texts.
