Glow, Grow and Go Foods
Foods that you eat contain the nutrients that your body needs.
The nutrients found in foods are carbohydrates, fats and oils, proteins, vitamins and minerals.
In the Caribbean, there are six food groups. These are found from animals, staples, fat, legumes and vegetables.
* Fats and staples give you energy.
* Staples contain nutrients called carbohydrates. Sugar, rice potatoes and bread are examples of foods in the staples group.
* Legumes contain the nutrients called proteins. They help to repair damaged body parts. Proteins are found in peas, bean and nuts.
* Meats, fish, eggs, and milk products are food from animals. These foods also help us grow and heal.
*Fruits and vegetables contain vitamins and minerals. They help to prevent infections, help your body fight diseases and keep your organs healthy.
* You need a balanced diet to keep healthy. A balanced diet has the right kinds and amounts of each food that your body needs.
* People who do not eat balanced meals may suffer from malnutrition, obesity or other illnesses.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE DO NOT EAT HEALTHY
There are signs that a person is not following a balanced
diet.
Some of these are obesity, thin limbs, swollen abdomen,
outline of bones showing, deformed legs, thin and discoloured hair.
Obese- person
eats too many junk food, fatty food and carbohydrate.
Malnutrition- person
not getting enough nutrients. May have a big head and a swollen abdomen.
