THE TEETH

 THE TEETH AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

The teeth are very important body parts. They are found in our mouth.

There are four main types of teeth, namely: incisors, canines, premolars and molars.

Our teeth can be further described as temporary or permanent.

Babies are born with a set of teeth called temporary teeth or milk teeth. At about age six, most children start to change or lose their temporary teeth. Some of the permanent teeth will start to grow.

At about age twelve, children lose all their temporary teeth. These teeth are replaced by permanent teeth. The permanent teeth are incisors, canines, premolars and molars.

The different teeth have different functions.

The incisors - used for cutting and biting
The canine - used for tearing
The molars and premolars-used for grinding or crushing food

We do not see a large section of our teeth as they are planted in a section of the mouth called the gum.

The white part of the teeth you see is called the enamel. It covers only the crown of the teeth. The enamel is the hardest material in our body. The other part of the teeth you cannot see is called the root.

How To Take Care Of Our Teeth

Grade: 3

Topic: Teeth Types: Temporary vs. Permanent Teeth

Lesson Duration: 1 hour

Objectives:

  1. Students will be able to identify the different types of teeth (incisors, canines, molars, premolars).
  2. Students will be able to distinguish between temporary (primary, milk, baby) and permanent teeth.

Materials Needed:

  • Teeth models or charts
  • Pictures of children and adults’ teeth
  • Tooth-shaped cutouts or drawings
  • Worksheets for the comparison chart
  • Worksheet for matching, sorting, and short answer activities
  • Projector
  • Chromebooks
  • Textbook Grade 3

Engage (10 minutes):

  1. Introduction:
    • Ask students to smile at each other and observe their teeth.
    • Show them a picture of a smiling face, highlighting the teeth.
    • Ask questions like:
      • "Why do you think we have different shapes of teeth?"
      • "Do you know why you lose your teeth as a child and then get new ones?"
  2. Discussion:
    • Talk about the fact that humans have two sets of teeth in their lifetime: baby (primary) teeth and adult (permanent) teeth.
    • Explain that different types of teeth have different functions.

Explore (15 minutes):

  1. Teeth Models or Charts:
    • Provide students with  diagrams of the mouth that show the different types of teeth.
    • Divide them into groups and have them explore the diagrams. Ask them to identify different teeth shapes and guess their functions.
  2. Guided Observation:
    • Ask each group to observe and compare the different teeth (incisors, canines, molars, premolars).
    • Discuss their shapes and functions (incisors for cutting, canines for tearing, molars and premolars for grinding).
    • Watch diagrams shown on teacher’s blogsite and engage in discussion.

Explain (15 minutes):

  1. Teeth Types Explanation:
    • Use a chart or projection to explain the four types of teeth:
      • Incisors: Used for cutting food.
      • Canines: Pointed teeth used for tearing food.
      • Premolars: Used for crushing food.
      • Molars: Large teeth used for grinding food.
  2. Temporary vs. Permanent Teeth:
    • Explain the difference between baby teeth (temporary) and adult teeth (permanent).
    • Show pictures of a child’s teeth and an adult’s teeth, pointing out how they differ in number and size.
  3. Key Points:
    • Baby teeth start falling out around age 6 to make room for permanent teeth.
    • An adult has 32 permanent teeth, while a child has only 20 temporary teeth.

Elaborate (10 minutes):

  1. Group Activity:
    • Provide students with tooth-shaped cutouts or drawings of different types of teeth.
    • Ask them to label each tooth and identify whether it belongs to a set of temporary or permanent teeth.
  2. Comparison Chart:
    • On a worksheet, have them compare the number of baby teeth and adult teeth by completing a table.
    • Complete oral exercise from teacher’s blogsite

Evaluate (10 minutes):

Three-Tier Evaluation Activity:

  1. Tier 1 - Matching Game:
    • Provide students with images of the four types of teeth and descriptions of their functions.
    • Ask them to match the correct image with the function.
  2. Tier 2 - Sorting Activity:
    • Give students pictures of a child's and an adult's mouth with teeth drawn in.
    • Ask them to circle the baby teeth in one picture and the permanent teeth in the other.
  3. Tier 3 - Short Answer:
    • Have students answer two questions:
      • "What is the difference between baby teeth and permanent teeth?"
      • "Why do we have different types of teeth?"

Reflection:

  • Ask students to share one interesting fact they learned about teeth today.
  • Reinforce the importance of taking care of both baby and permanent teeth.
