Strand: Word Recognition and fluency

Objective: Students will be able to read words with diphthongs "oi" and "oy" in context.

Materials Needed:

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed worksheets with words containing "oi" and "oy"
  • Storybooks or passages with words containing "oi" and "oy"
  • Flashcards with words containing "oi" and "oy"
  • Drawing materials (optional)
  • Projector
  • Chromebooks

Lesson Duration: 60 minutes

Engage (10 minutes):

  • Have students answer some riddles which contain words with diphthongs “oi” and “oy”. What happens when the water on the fire gets hot? It boils.
  • Display the answers with the diphthongs "oi" and "oy" on the whiteboard. They will call the words and tell which sound they hear being repeated.
  • Ask students to brainstorm words they know that contain these diphthongs. Write their suggestions on the board.
  • Engage in a brief discussion about the sounds of "oi" and "oy" and where students have encountered them before.

Explore (10 minutes):

  • Show students a series of words  with words containing "oi" and "oy." Words will be posted on teacher’s blogsite.
  • Ask students to read each word aloud individually or in pairs.

  • Allow students to explore the pronunciation of the diphthongs by repeating the words multiple times.

  • Distribute printed worksheets with words containing "oi" and "oy" to each student.
