TOPIC: Letter Sound /Uu/


OBJECTIVES:

1. For students to readily identify letter "u"  and associate same with the sound.

2. Tell the location (i.e. beginning, middle, end) of the /u/ sound in a number of one syllable or two syllable words

3. Learn and practise mouth formations for different sounds of the alphabet (u)

4. Learn and use basic sight words

5. Blend phonemes to form new words

Let's look back at the letter sounds we have done so far.


Grade Level: Grade 1

Subject: Phonics

Letter Sound: “u” (short /ŭ/ as in "up")

Time: 1 Hour

 Objectives

Students will be able to:

1.      Learn and practice mouth formation for the letter sound “u”

2.      Blend phonemes to form words with the short "u" sound

3.      Substitute consonant sounds to create new rhyming words

4.      Learn and use basic sight words (e.g., us, up, under, but)

Materials:

Magnetic board

Letter tiles (magnetic)

Projector, laptops, chromebooks

Let's review some of the letter sounds we have looked at so far.

 ENGAGE (5–7 mins)

Activity: Mystery Bag Game

·         Place familiar items or pictures of objects with the short “u” sound (e.g., cup, mug, bus, sun) in a bag.

·         Let students pull an item and guess the sound it begins with.

·         Teacher introduces the short “u” sound with a song (Video clip) or chant.
🗣️ Example: "Up, up, up we go, U says /ŭ/ you now know!"

 

 

EXPLORE (10–12 mins)

Activity: Mirror Talk

·         Give each student a small mirror.

·         Model how the mouth forms the short “u” sound (relaxed jaw, tongue in middle).

·         Students mimic the sound and check mouth shape in their mirrors.

Differentiation:

·         🎯 Tier 1 (Support): Use visual cues and teacher support.

·         🎯 Tier 2 (On Level): Mirror and sound practice in pairs.

·         🎯 Tier 3 (Challenge): Students explain mouth movement to a peer.

 

 EXPLAIN (10–12 mins)

Activity: Blending and Word Building

·         Teacher introduces 3-letter short u words (e.g., sun, cup, bug). Students will tell what each word is.

·         Explain how the letter “u” is formed.

·         Use letter tiles or magnetic letters to blend and read.

·         Practice on board or pocket chart.

·         Listen for the “u” sound in CVC words and spell them orally

STEM Component: Use a simple interactive app or projector (e.g., Starfall or Phonics Play) to drag letters into place to form “u” words. (Liveworksheet activities from teacher’s blogsite)

Sight Words Focus: us, up, under, but — Introduce using flashcards.

 

 ELABORATE (10–12 mins)

Activity: Word Substitution Game

·         Students work in pairs to change beginning consonants to make new rhyming u words.
Example: “bug” → “hug” → “rug” → “mug”

·         Use a "U Word Family Wheel" with interchangeable parts.

STEM Link: Let students use a tablet to play an online rhyming game with the short u word family.

Differentiation:

·         Tier 1: Match word cards to pictures. (Chromebook activity)

·         Tier 2: Use whiteboards to write and change initial letters.

·         Tier 3: Create silly sentences with new u words.
