5E Phonics Lesson Plan: Letter Sound “F”

Grade: 1
Duration: 1 hour
Phonics Focus: Letter sound "f"
STEM Integration Theme: Floating and Sinking with "F" objects (feather, foil, fork, etc.)

Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  1. Learn and practise mouth formation for different sounds of the alphabet ("f").

  2. Blend phonemes to form words (e.g., f-a-n, f-i-t).

  3. Substitute consonant sounds in words to create new rhyming words (e.g., fan → pan, fit → sit).

  4. Learn and use basic sight words (e.g., fun, for, from, find).

Materials Needed

  • Feathers, foil, forks, foam, other test objects

  • Small tub or basin with water

  • Mirrors

  • Magnetic letters/letter cards

  • Phoneme blocks or paper tiles

  • Chart paper, markers

  • Sight word flashcards

  • Picture/word matching cards

  • Evaluation worksheet templates

  • Projector, chromebooks

ENGAGE (5–7 minutes)

Activity:
Show a feather and ask:
“What do you notice about this object?”
Let students describe texture, weight, color. Then ask:
“What sound does the word feather start with?”

🎵 Play a short song or chant:
🎶 “F is for feather, fish and fun – f-f-f, let’s have some fun!”

Purpose: Get students excited about discovering the sound /f/.

EXPLORE (10 minutes)

Mouth Formation and Sound Practice:

  • Use a mirror. Guide students to gently press top teeth on bottom lip and blow air out softly. Model and have students imitate.

  • Say words slowly: fan, fun, fat, fit, fig, and ask students to identify the beginning sound.

STEM Activity: “Float or Fall?”

  • Give pairs of students objects starting with “f” (feather, foil, fork, foam) and other random objects.

  • Students predict and test which will float or fall in a tub of water.

Discussion Prompt:
“What do these objects start with? Do they float or fall?”

EXPLAIN (15 minutes)

Blending & Segmenting Sounds:

  • Use letter cards or magnetic letters: f-a-n, f-i-t, f-o-g.

  • Model how to blend each letter’s sound.

  • Have students build and read each word.

Rhyming Substitution Game:

  • Say the word “fan.” Ask:

“What if we change the /f/ to /m/? What word do we get?”

  • Repeat with: fit → sit, fig → pig, fog → dog.

Sight Word Focus (Word Wall Activity):

  • Introduce sight words: fun, for, from, find.

  • Use flashcards and sentences:
“I have fun.” “Look for the ball.”
“Come from school.” “Can you find it?”

ELABORATE (15 minutes)

Hands-on Word Building:
Use phoneme blocks or paper letter tiles. Students build and manipulate words:

  • fan → fun

  • fig → fix

  • fit → fat → fin

Writing Practice:
Students write 3 “f” words and use one sight word in a sentence.
STEM Link (optional):
Have students record findings from “Float or Fall” in a chart.
