Topic: Irregular Plural Nouns

Grade: 3

Duration: 1 hour
Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify and correctly use irregular plural nouns in both speech and writing.

Materials: Work cards, projector, teacher’s blogsite

Lesson Framework: 5E Model

  1. Engage (10 minutes)
    • Objective: Activate prior knowledge and spark curiosity.
    • Review what nouns are and provide examples of nouns.
    • Activity: Show pictures of singular and plural items (e.g., one tooth vs. many teeth, one child vs. several children).
    • Discussion: Ask students how we change words from singular to plural (e.g., adding "-s" or "-es"). Then, introduce the idea that some words don't follow the regular rules.
    • Interactive Question: "Can you guess what the plural of 'mouse' is?" Guide the conversation toward the concept of irregular plural nouns.
  2. Explore (10 minutes)
    • Objective: Allow students to discover irregular plural nouns on their own.
    • Activity: Create a sorting activity.
      • Provide cards with singular nouns (some regular, some irregular).
      • Have students work in pairs to sort the words into two categories: “Regular Plurals” and “Irregular Plurals.”
      • Examples: dog/dogs, cat/cats, man/men, foot/feet.
    • Discussion: After sorting, go over the irregular words together and explain how their plurals differ.
    • Watch a short video clip from teacher’s blogsite on the topic.
    • Complete a given activity orally.
  3. Explain (15 minutes)
    • Objective: Clarify the rules for irregular plural nouns.
    • Mini-Lesson: Write a list of common irregular plural nouns on the board and explain how each one changes. Focus on specific examples, such as:
      • Man → Men
      • Child → Children
      • Mouse → Mice
      • Foot → Feet
      • Tooth → Teeth
    • Guided Practice: Provide sentences with blanks where students must fill in the correct plural form of an irregular noun.
      • Example: "The ___ (child) are playing in the park." ("children")
  4. Elaborate (15 minutes)
    • Objective: Extend understanding and practice the skill.
    • Group Activity: Divide the students into small groups and give each group a short story containing singular forms of irregular nouns. Their task is to rewrite the story, changing the singular nouns to their correct plural forms.
      • Example: "The mouse ran through the field" becomes "The mice ran through the field."
    • Share: Each group reads their story aloud, highlighting the irregular plural nouns they used.
  5. Evaluate (10 minutes)
    • Objective: Assess students’ understanding through tiered activities.

Three-Tiered Evaluation Activities

Tier 1 (Basic):

    • Worksheet: Fill-in-the-blank activity where students are provided with a list of singular nouns and must write their irregular plural forms.
      • Example: "One tooth → Many ___" (teeth).

Tier 2 (Intermediate):

    • Sentence Writing: Students create 5 sentences using different irregular plural nouns correctly. Encourage them to think creatively.
      • Example: "The men are working together to build a house."

Tier 3 (Advanced):

    • Creative Writing: Students write a short paragraph or story (4-5 sentences) using at least three irregular plural nouns in context.
      • Example: "The geese flew over the children, who were playing with their pet mice. Their feet were covered in mud, but they didn’t mind!"

Extend: Complete activities on topic from teacher’s blogsite.
