Subject: Language Arts

Strand: Grammar & Conventions

Duration: 1 Hour

Grade Level: 3

Topic: Singular and Plural Demonstrative Pronouns

Objective: Students will be able to formulate and apply rules for the use of singular and plural demonstrative pronouns (this, that, these, those).

Materials Needed

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Teacher’s Blogsite  with images (near/far objects in singular/plural)
  • Chart paper
  • Markers
  • Worksheets with exercises
  • Small objects to be used in activities (e.g., toy, pencil, ball)
  • Projector
  • Laptop
  • Chromebooks

Lesson Plan:

Engage (10 minutes)

  1. Introduction to Demonstrative Pronouns:
    • Begin by showing a variety of objects in the classroom.
    • Use sentences like: "This is a pencil," "That is a ball," "These are books," "Those are chairs."
    • Ask the class to notice the words "this," "that," "these," and "those."
    • Explain that these are demonstrative pronouns, used to point out people or things.
    • Draw a quick chart /graphic organizer on the board:

Singular

Plural

this (near)

these (near)

that (far)

those (far)

  1. Guided Questions:
    • Ask the students:
      • "When do we use 'this' and 'these'?"
      • "When do we use 'that' and 'those'?"

Explore (15 minutes)

  1. Sorting Activity with Flashcards:
    • Distribute flashcards with images of objects in varying distances and quantities (e.g., one apple near, two apples far).
    • Have the students work in pairs to sort the flashcards into groups under the correct pronouns on a large class chart.
    • Students should say aloud, "This is ___," "Those are ___," etc., as they place the card under the right column.
  2. Discussion:
    • After the sorting, discuss why each card belongs in a particular group. Guide students in formulating the rule:
      • Use "this" and "that" for one item.
      • Use "these" and "those" for more than one item.
      • "This" and "these" are for nearby objects; "that" and "those" are for far away ones.

3. Watch a video clip from teacher’s blogsite which further sheds light on the topic in question.

4. Complete one of the exercises posted orally.

Explain (10 minutes)

  1. Formulating the Rule:
    • Write the rules for singular and plural demonstrative pronouns on the board:
      • "This" (singular, near), "That" (singular, far)
      • "These" (plural, near), "Those" (plural, far)
    • Ask the students to create their own examples using objects in the classroom and nearby locations.

Elaborate (15 minutes)

  1. Interactive Pronoun Game (Demonstration and Sentence Formation):
    • Place a variety of objects around the room (both near and far).
    • Students take turns picking an object and must say a sentence using the correct demonstrative pronoun (e.g., "That is a clock" or "These are markers").
    • The rest of the class gives a thumbs up or down if the correct pronoun was used.
  2. Writing Task:
    • Provide a worksheet with sentences where students need to fill in the blanks with the correct pronouns ("This is ___," "Those are ___," etc.).

Evaluate (10 minutes)

Three-Tier Activities for Evaluation:

  1. Tier 1: Basic
    • Students match demonstrative pronouns to pictures (provided in a worksheet). They will simply circle the correct option. (blogsite activity)
  2. Tier 2: Intermediate
    • Write sentences where students choose the correct pronoun from a list. For example:
      • "___ are my shoes" (This, These, That, Those).
      • They will also underline whether the object is singular or plural and near or far.
  3. Tier 3: Advanced
    • Students will independently write their own sentences using demonstrative pronouns for objects around the classroom, explaining why they chose that pronoun (Is the object singular/plural? Is it near/far?).

Closure (5 minutes)

  • Review the rules of singular and plural demonstrative pronouns.
  • Ask students to provide examples of when they might use these pronouns in real life.
  • Assign homework: Students will write 5 sentences using demonstrative pronouns to describe objects at home.
