 TOPIC: Letter Sound /Rr/


OBJECTIVES:

1. For students to readily identify letter "r"  and associate same with the sound.

2. Tell the location (i.e. beginning, middle, end) of the /r/ sound in a number of one syllable or two syllable words

3. Learn and practise mouth formations for different sounds of the alphabet (r)

4. Learn and use basic sight words

5. Blend phonemes to form new words


CONTENT :

The letter is a letter in the alphabet. It is a consonant.


These are some
sight words with initial letter "r": round ,rabbit, rain , ring.
These are some sight words with final 'r' : her, over, chair, car, door, letter, paper


ENGAGE:

Students will listen to the song in the video clip below, then recall some of the events that took place in the song.

Some of these will be written on c/board. Teacher will underscore the "r" words in the phrases.

Make the sounds highlighted in the song. (Rah, Ray, Rooo).

Name the letter that makes the sound.

Stress the /r/ sound, paying attention to mouth formation.


EXPLORE:

Discuss the words identified in the clip. Determine the location of the sound /r/.

river, read, raft, diver, water, river

Blend phonemes to pronounce the words.

Teacher will introduce students to some sight words that begin/end with letter 'r'.

Example of sight wordsround ,rabbit, rain , ring, her, over, chair, car, door, letter, paper

Use some of the new words learnt, together with sight words to complete sentences orally.

eg. Sam puts the (paper, round) boat in the (read, river).


EXPLAIN:

1. Make the sound of /r/.

2. Identify both upper and lower case "Rr".

3. Write the letter "Rr" correctly in their books.

4. Identify at least 5 sight words beginning with letter "r" or ending with letter "r"


ELABORATE:

Review some of the letter sounds looked at in previous lessons.

Teacher will make the sounds and students will show the letters from their letter bag, that give the sound .

Teacher will then dissect the words below, sound the letters, then have students listening to the sounds , then using that knowledge to spell the words on their spelling work boards.

Eg.  r/e/s/t,    t/r/a/ck,  s/t/r/a/p

As the words are written on the work boards correctly, teacher will have students blending the phonemes to pronounce the words.
